Personal resilience - what really matters

Writer: Jon ShamahJon Shamah

Talk is starting to turn to resilience. So, I really guess that most of the conversations will be “Cyber-Resilience”. Do not get me wrong, this topic is essential to be build in from the first planning scribbles on a table napkin. Maybe especially brought to notice when the coffee gets spilled over that all-so-essential flow diagram napkin. And there are lots of technical issues that really, really need fixing and sorting out. This is not to be surprising with such complex and interconnecting technologies. Add into the mix, every improving cryptography, processing power, and connectivity, it really will be a full career path for generations to come. AI will help, but the emphasis will change as new methodologies arise needing manual intervention.

But this is not my worry! What about personal resilience?

I just had a very real concern after reading about the progress with digital driving licenses. Here in the UK, and I guess in the rest of Europe too, the move is to eventually have your legally valid driving licence in your digital wallet. (and passport too)

OK, I drop my phone in a bucket of water, or I have a car accident (I hope not) that breaks my phone ….. What then? I guess that the police could check on their radio or computer, but they can do that already.

So my answer is to ALWAYS carry my driving license in my (leather) wallet.

Oh…Oh, the same goes for my credit card, European Healthcard, and any other critic documents, even if they have been digitised. One physical credit card in my (leather) wallet too.

I guess that this means that I will still need my (leather) wallet, except it will definitely be thinner.

…and strangely I am quite happy with this resilience! At least I will not need to apply for a new one if I lose my phone.

Let us ensure that we use appropriate technology for our needs and comfort zones.

PS. Please help me if I am missing something :-)
